About Us

Our highest priority is the safety and well-being of the horses (and hounds). That being said there are several factors which differentiate our Thoroughbred investments from those of our competitors:

  • We believe love is one of the most powerful forces in the universe. Animals (and people) will do for love what they would not do for any other reason. This will typically manifest in a healthier, less stressed horse, with a better disposition and that is highly motivated to achieve its potential by being more adaptable to the required training etc.
  • We also believe strongly in the synergistic benefits of natural holistic husbandry practices. Our horses are guaranteed steroid and growth hormone free and have been raised using a holistic approach. We do not believe in “hot boxing” sales prospects so they have a pretty coat. Studies have shown that being allowed to roam free in pasture increases bone density. Thus you will notice the sun drenched coats on our horses. Their ears remain unclipped to protect them from the bugs. They stay OUT in the weather as much as possible. We encourage running and playing. We proudly feed Triple Crown® feed with Formula 707® Daily Essentials & SuperSal to ensure proper (not maximum) development. Everything is managed for the best interest of the horse- not the quick ROI that could compromise his well being. The priority of many competitors is to cultivate traits they think most marketable at the time e.g. size, and they will use all available means to reach these goals. Conversely, the holistic or total body health of the horse is paramount at Good Shepherd Thoroughbreds LLC and horses will never be overfed, medicated or unnaturally induced to mature in any way- even if it means they won’t “show” as well at the sales.
  • We only purchase horses for resale whose pedigrees and backgrounds are indicative of soundness in addition to speed. Sale prospects will be selected based on their likelihood of developing a winning and profitable balance between soundness & stamina with precociousness & speed -emphasis on soundness.

 The majority of Thoroughbred yearlings have been bred, managed, and sold specifically and solely for the market without reservation. A Good Shepherd Thoroughbred yearling has been carefully selected and nurtured with an emphasis on whole horse health and soundness. We never tip the balance in favor of speed and precociousness solely for marketing purposes- as is so often the case- because we feel this is seldom in the best interest of the horse. We believe that world class speed and precociousness will ultimately produce the best rate of return only when balanced properly with durability, stamina, and a happy mind.

Good Shepherd Thoroughbreds LLC is also home to a pack of rescued ex-racing greyhounds. We are active in greyhound rescue and also obtain all farm/guard dogs from rescue organizations as well.
